Mission Trip Ecuador

Ecuador is a stunning country. But despite having a high fluency of tourist and great economic programs, there are still many communities that suffer the consequences of natural disasters, poverty, illiteracy, and diseases.

Most of the programs we have in Ecuador are located in Quito, the capital city, and the Galapagos Islands, one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Essentially, if you only have a week from your vacations to volunteer in Ecuador, or more than 12 weeks because you are taking a long time off your normal duties, you can contact us and start this adventure right now.

Everybody is welcomed to become a volunteer Ecuador. Whether you are a university student, if you are about to finish high school, if you are an entrepreneur looking for new and meaningful experiences. Even if you have never done this kind of volunteer experience before.

No previous experience or career is required to travel with A Broader View. All we, and the communities, need from you is to have a big heart, empathy, patience, flexibility, and compassion.

Most of the programs we have in Ecuador work on specific schedules, meaning, if you wish to spend the afternoon and the night walking the city, or traveling somewhere else during the weekend, you can perfectly do so without interrupting the volunteering activities.

To volunteer overseas is a responsibility you assume with the community you are helping and us. But it doesn't have to be a boring or strict activity. We want you to enjoy your gap year Ecuador, not to feel compromised with something that you genuinely don't feel connected with.

Among our benefits, we include Spanish lessons if you need them, but in none of our programs we ask you to speak the language of the country you are traveling to, even though it's certainly an advantage.

Stop postponing this trip, and let's start your mission trip Ecuador! You can join programs in daycare, welfare, helping kids from the street, become an English teacher, hippotherapy, pre nurse or premedical programs, and more.

Safety and Security

The safety of our volunteers is paramount for A Broader View Volunteers. The majority of ABV Volunteers travel and serve without major incident.  However, programs are based in some of the least developed countries and in some of the most remote areas in the world, health, safety, and security risks are an unavoidable part of life and international service. To address these concerns and to safeguard the well-being of our program participants, A Broader View has safety protocols and security procedures for all programs:

Volunteer Safety
  • Security: All project sites, local in-country staff and accommodation sites have gone through a rigorous filter and have been hand selected. ABV has spent almost 11 years cultivating and strengthening of our local partnerships & host family relationships. In-country staff visits, daily research of local conditions, as well as weekly checkup of our host families and accommodations are conducted. Site selection is based on criteria including; access to medical, banking, postal, and other essential services; access to communication, transportation, and local markets; availability of adequate housing and living arrangements.
  • Pre-Departure Guide: Your ABV account will have a detailed volunteer guide. Volunteers are provided country information, packing lists, customs and language information, and much more. ABV also provides information about visa requirements, vaccinations, climate, weather, and safety and security issues specific to the country.
  • Volunteer Summary: A full month before traveling volunteers are provided a detailed account of their volunteer project (including supply/donation list), arrival procedures, emergency contact information, accommodation details and the full name, phone and email of their local ABV Coordinator.
  • Overseas Staff and communication:  Our local staff support is immeasurable in their professionalism and dedication to the volunteers under their charge. The majority of ABV staff coordinators have been involved since the very start (over 11 years) and are well experienced handling the unexpected such as situations where volunteer students become ill, suffer accidents, are the victims of pick pockets. ABV staff is trained to react in a responsible and levelheaded way when emergencies do arise. They will do whatever is necessary to assure this, whether this means obtaining prompt and appropriate medical attention, embassy intervention or local authorities.
  • Host Families and accommodations: Our local volunteer guesthouses, onsite project dorms and host families have been hand-picked. A Broader View accommodation have specific standards for the hygiene, cleanliness, location and comfortable living conditions for our volunteers. Telephone access is available 24/7 and most sites have internet access. Volunteers have to follow the curfew of the host accommodation.
  • Arrival Meeting/Orientation: ABV programs provide a customized arrival plan.  We can arrange your arrival/pick up at the airport, bus station or local hotel.   Start your program with peace of mind, having the local ABV staff meeting you when you arrive in-country.  Volunteers are provided orientation before starting their program.  Orientation schedules vary from country to country but will include acclimation tours of the local town/city, accommodation neighborhood, geolocation map description, program location, main interesting points in the city or area. Emergency and medical protocols will be discussed and also address safety and security issues specific to the community volunteers live and work in.

Every staff member of A Broader View is committed to providing volunteers with the support they need to successfully meet the challenges they will face to have a safe, healthy, and productive service. The success of each ABV volunteer is our prime goal. We rely on volunteers to exercise personal responsibility and demonstrate both a keen awareness of the world around them and a willingness to adjust their behavior in a manner that will enhance their safety and well-being. In the end, your efforts will be rewarded with an incredible, unique experience.

The emergency lines are staffed by an A Broader View:

Day Care Center

Gapyear in Ecuador, this project has been in the works since 1949 for children who have been orphaned, abandoned, or whose families are unable to care for them. The family approach in this Children's Village is based on the three following principles: each child needs a mother, they grow up naturally with brothers and sisters, and they live in their own house within a supportive village environment.

The center has a great response to the social development needs of society's most vulnerable children and young people. This center establishes facilities and programs that aim to strengthen families and prevent the abandonment of children. In Quito, the program  has 7 Social Centers that work as a kindergarten for small children whose parents are working and have no other place to leave their kids. The center gives attention towards the children, family, women and community.

The center hosts more than 80 children from ages 8 months to 4 years old. There are five groups of children and their daily activities depend on age. Volunteers at the day care center can help by creating recreational activities for the children, playing with them, organizing games, making didactic material, helping with feeding and cleaning the children.

Volunteers who work here are going to work with kids who form strong bonds very quickly because they are already so vulnerable, they become attached to those they spend their days with. The children will miss you and feel sad if you do not take this volunteer position seriously by not showing up to work. It is very important that before you leave, you tell them with anticipation when you are leaving.  The volunteer position will contain lots of laughter and joy, but it is important that you are responsible, show respect and have confidence in fulfilling your duties as a volunteer here.

Welfare / Elderly Care

Volunteer in Ecuador, fundación Abuelitos was originally founded in the year 2001. Its main goal is to promote, support and realize efficient attention to senior citizens. The foundation creates concrete actions that will promote the importance of an active, worthy, healthy, participative and productive old age.

In Ecuador, the great number of senior citizens is evident on the streets. One can see that many are beggars or how they are living in a very poor economic situation. There are more than one million elderly people in Ecuador that live without social aid and suffer from abandonment of their families and society in general. The program offers services to this class of people in areas such as: physical aid/therapy, personal growth, recreation and occupational therapies, medical attention, education and various workshops, among others, that enable the elderly to greatly improve their quality of life.

Volunteers will be able to assist in all the activities planned by the foundation. It all depends on your experience, effort, interests and the capacity of your love and care for the elderly. In general, the day starts with some physical activity and a short human development workshop before sharing breakfast. Then the activities begin. For example, dancing, theater, narratives, chorus lessons and activities in the bakery and handcraft workshops. At the end of the activities, they share lunch together.

There is an average of about 100 senior citizens per day that visit the foundation between the ages of 60 -75 years old. Your help is greatly appreciated in anyway.

Volunteer in Ecuador, this project was created in 1995 with the main objective to offer rehabilitation and integrate recreational programs through therapies with horses for children, youth, and adults with mental or physical disabilities.

Riding therapy or equine-assisted therapy and canine-assisted therapy with dogs is recognized worldwide as an effective method for physical, mental and/or emotional rehabilitation. It transmits to the patient a sense of balance, coordination, orientation and rhythm.

The movement of the horses back is used therapeutically.  Equine-assisted therapy uses horses as therapeutic instruments and prepares the patient for other physiotherapeutic functions, but offers huge psychological benefits.

Volunteers will handle the horses during therapy sessions 3 or 4 people are necessary. Volunteers are more than welcome to help with feeding of the horses, preparing them for each therapy session, cleaning the horses afterwards and other general tasks during the therapy sessions.  In addition, the volunteer can also help with horse-back riding lessons for the general public and in the administrative area, as well as garden maintenance. It is also possible to participate in the canine-assisted therapies.

Hospital Health

Volunteer in Ecuador, the hospital was founded in 1973. This public hospital offers the best service and technology of all public hospitals in Quito. It provides services for all areas of health to people who don´t have any medical insurance.

The hospital has over 240 beds available and more than 10,500 patients are treated every year. The hospital has 4 basic specialties and 29 subspecialties like Cardiology, Neurology, Pulmonology, etc.

The hospital invites almost all medical students from Quito, and around the country to practice medicine here. Volunteers have the chance to do so as well by rotating through the different areas of the hospital such as emergency room, pediatrics, surgery and more.  The main role is to observe, listen and learn from the professionals.  There are more than enough doctors and nurses to perform the medical practices and the volunteer can shadow and assist, gaining valuable hands on experience that a regular classroom or lecture hall cannot teach.

This is a great chance to improve your skills, build your resume by learn about medicine in a developing nation and improve your Spanish. We recommend our language immersion option for those less than proficient in Spanish (be able to talk 8 hours a day in Spanish with the local staff). However, translator are available (extra $40 per day/5hours) to help you get acclimated into the project.

Kindergarten

Volunteer in Ecuador, this is a public kindergarten that offers education, nutrition, health and affection to 220 children from 4 to 6 years old distributed within 8 classrooms. Most of children come from poor families. It is located inside of the Itchimbía Park in Quito’s central area. The most important skill needed to work with these children is patience.

The volunteers have the chance to work with the teachers as an assistant during the classes.  On Thursdays and Fridays they will assist the English Teacher and on Monday and Wednesday (this can change each semester), they can assist the Music Teacher, or another subject.  Other activities may also include the creation of didactic material, help during meal time, and recreational activities with the children.

Working with these children is a fulfilling position.  Many of the children make strong bonds with those they work with very quickly, so it is important that you do not take them for granted and take full responsibility for your actions, words, and work ethic.  It is advised that you also tell the children how long you will be working with them and when you will be leaving in anticipation so that they do not get let down when you leave.

Street Kids / Day Care

Volunteer in Ecuador, this day care centre was founded in April of 2006 to improve children’s quality of life of those who work at the waste dump yard.  They work there each day recycling what they can. Years ago, the children would spend their time with their parents at the waste centre in the harsh elements of weather, not to mention the uncleanliness, making the children very prone to getting sick. Now with the help of many volunteers, the children are healthier, clean, and safely being cared for in this centre.

The centre also acts as a medical dispensary for the children and parents at no extra cost.

The center hosts more than 40 children from ages 8 months to 4 years old. There are three groups of children and their daily activities depend on their age. Volunteers at the day care center are able to help by creating various recreational activities for the children, playing with them, organizing games, creating didactic material, helping during meal times and teaching the children about personal hygiene.

This project enables the children to learn how to live according to their own culture and religion, while also being active members of the community. The center helps children to recognize and express their individual abilities, interests and talents. They ensure that each child receives the education, skills and training they need to be successful and contributing members of society.

Current research is focused on ensuring that ecosystem restoration proceeds towards a more pristine condition – this requires ensuring that any introduced plant species do not out-compete the native vegetation.

Volunteer work is about 3-5 hours per day, 5 days a week. Volunteers will help in light construction tasks, reforestation efforts and help with eradication of non native plants. Much of the work is outside working in the Galapaguera greenhouse. This program lets you do a little bit of everything pertaining to providing support of sustainable conservation efforts on the Island. This is a great opportunity to discover the wonders and wild life of the Galapagos by offering hands on contributions to their sustainability. Expect to get your hands dirty and work different schedules based on the project needs. This project begins and ends in Quito.

This trip was incredible and I don’t regret coming for a second. Our trip was a month long and I think that is a perfect amount of time for first time travelers. Changing sheets, cleaning the bed frames, and washing patients will most likely take up all your time.

I could spend my mornings with tortoises or sea lions and my afternoons helping out at a local dive shop. My volunteering was exhausting but extremely rewarding. I will never forget getting to feed baby Galapagos tortoises or getting to hang out with sea lions on the many pristine beaches.

We recommend budgeting between US$5 and US$10 per day to purchase lunch if you don't return to the host family, let the host family know if you change the lunch plans. If you have specific dietary requirements, our local teams and home-stays can customize to you but be flexible as well.

Festivals and Festivities

Easter Week in Ecuador

As in many predominantly Catholic countries, Easter is one of the largest public holidays in the country. Eye-catching fanfare spans the week leading up to Easter Sunday. This week is called Semana Santa, Spanish for “Holy Week.” The date of Easter and its related celebrations depends on when the vernal equinox takes place. Easter Week occurs sometime between March and April.

Palm Sunday, which happens a week before Easter, compels Ecuadorians across the country to parade down the street with palm fronds, making their way to mass. If you’re in Quito, stop by the Plaza de San Francisco to see a ceremonial blessing of the palms. Traditional dances and hymns fill the streets, and nearly everyone carries a palm frond.

This week even has its own soup, a dish called fanesca. Salt cod is one of the main ingredients. It’s stewed along with a hodgepodge of other traditional ingredients.

Holy (Maundy) Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday

According to Catholic tradition, Holy Thusday commemorates Jesus’ Last Supper. On Holy Thursday, Ecuadorians visit graveyards with offerings for departed loved ones. These offerings usually consist of bread that is baked especially for the occasion.

In the evening the churches of Quito open their doors, with the glow of the candle-lit altars reaching the streets. Visitors to Quito should make sure to walk around the historic district on the evening of Holy Thursday.

Good Friday is a solemn holiday, and Ecuadorians take to the streets to perform dramatic tributes to the crucifixion of Christ. Quito has an especially massive parade on Good Friday. Visitors are usually taken aback by the purple, pointed hoods worn by a large number of participants. These hoods are traditionally worn as a sign of penitence, a custom that dates back to the middle ages.

Ecuador’s loveliest masses take place on Holy Saturday. Holy Saturday masses take place in the evening, in anticipations of Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is an intensely religious celebration for Ecuadorians. Easter masses take place all day, and carry on into the evening.

Carnival

Ecuadorians celebrate Carnival in an effort to eat and drink enough to stay satiated throughout the fasting period of Lent. The exact date varies from year to year. It takes place either in February or March, on the weekend closest to the New Moon.

Carnival in Ecuador has its own distinct traditions. Throwing water balloons is one of the most common activities. Strangers (including visitors) are fair game, so wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet!

Independence Day and Simón Bolívar’s Birthday

On May 24th 1822, General Antonio José Sucre defeated the Spanish in the Battle of Pichincha. On May 24th, military parades commemorate the decisive battle, which took place just outside Quito.

Ecuadorians also celebrate the birthday of Venezuelan Simón Bolívar to commemorate his role in the liberation of South America from Spanish rule. This holiday is celebrated on July 24th.

All Saints’ Day and All Soul’s Day

On All Souls’ Day, Ecuadorians visit the graves of loved ones with offerings of baked goods, a continuation of the Andean tradition of leaving food for the departed. The souls of the dead are said to return to the earth for 24 hours during the first days of November. Ecuadorian tradition dictates you risk the spirits’ displeasure if you don’t have a snack ready for them. These holidays are celebrated on November 1st and 2nd.

Do note that you may find food left on graves. Ecuador’s poor are welcome to take the food that is left on graves, but visitors are not.

Christmas and New Year’s

On Christmas Eve, Ecuadorians celebrate a special mass called the Misa de Gallo, or “Rooster Mass.” On December 25th, Ecuadorians go all out with citywide Christmas pageants. This is the day of the Paseo del Niño children’s parade. Children dress up as different characters from the Christmas nativity, and march down the street with statues of the baby Jesus. These statues typically have a special place in the family home.
