Are you going through that time where you just want to take a break from your work? Perhaps you would like to do something meaningful before starting or finishing college, and A Broader View is here to help you start your gap year Costa Rica.
Independently of the age, there are many people in the world who wish to stop with their routine and actually do something significant with their time.
Some take a gap year to travel the world, some others quit their jobs to follow their passion, and some others just want the experience of being a volunteer in a country that needs them.
If you happen to be one of them, you can check the programs we have to volunteer Costa Rica.
How To Volunteer Costa Rica
You have probably heard of Costa Rica for their beaches, delicious food, and famous parties. But what you don’t probably know is that this country, despite being a very famous touristic destination, has gone through harsh living conditions, natural disasters, hunger, and significant illiteracy levels.
Since the ones who have less are the ones who suffer the most of these terrible consequences, the more help we can offer, the better their lives will be.
That’s why we have 19 volunteer Costa Rica programs you can join right now. We work on areas like medicine, dental hygiene, women empowerment, child and senior care, language and cultural immersion, sports, and animal rescue.
Even if you have no experience working or volunteering in those areas, you are still more than welcome to join us.
Most of our programs are located in San Juan, Escazu, the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean areas. Your working schedule is designed to help you help others during the week, but still have enough time to walk around the city and enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
Whether you only have one week or an entire month, our programs work from one to six weeks.
And if you had already planned a trip to Costa Rica with your friends, we welcome groups of five people or more to join the same program, as long as they are 17 years old or more.
What about younger people? There’s no age for wanting to help, but legally there are some restrictions about minors traveling abroad, so we welcome young kids from 12 to 16 years old if they come with their parents.
If you are already motivated, we invite you to check all the information we have about Costa Rica on our site. And also, to read thoughtfully all the 19 programs we have been working on in this country.
Once you have one you feel connected with, you can start your application process by sending us an email, through chat or phone. We are here to answer all your doubts, and to help you help those who need it the most.

Sloth Conservation
Volunteer in Costa Rica’s Pacific area which is home to a wide array of wildlife including sloths, monkeys, turtles, iguana and other marsupials. Join us today and be part of a community led mammal monitoring and conservation project.
Animals are often illegally hunted for food or income. Some are killed by urban and agricultural expansion.Expansion of local towns and developments have also directly reduced the populations of many species. The local population often lacks knowledge about the importance of these species, as well as how to mitigate risks to them and the entire surrounding forest system.
Sloth behavior remains particularly elusive especially with regards to how they fare after rescue centers release them into the wild. Research on them, anteaters, raccoons, other mammals and more about sea turtle nesting behavior is needed in the area.
Environmental education activities provide local youth opportunities to participate in conservation. It also gives them the opportunity to learn English which can be help them pursue careers in ecotourism. Volunteers are involved in night walks and helping with the turtle hatchery. The Monitoring Center provides a unique way for locals and international volunteers to get involved in the conservational efforts in this province.
Objectives and volunteer role
- Initiate research the populations and behavior of local mammals (including sloths, monkeys, raccoons and anteaters)
- Participate in activities related to turtle nesting and hatching, including night walks and egg rescues
- Raise public awareness on wildlife care for greater society to understand their role and the value of conservation of wild species.
- Link professionals from different sectors in the development of the center, such as biology, social areas and communication, economics, architecture and engineering areas.
- Provide support for volunteers through a leadership role in the conservation of sea turtles
- Engage local community through providing informative programs and volunteer opportunities
- Coordinate and conduct conservational education programs at the local secondary school

Each family is provided support through nursing, nutritionists, psychological, pharmacy according to the clinical picture of the child. This help includes food, clothing, literacy, recreation, training and emotional support to the patients and their families.

I had a fantastic experience all the way around with ABV. From the time I inquired about their programs, to almost the day before I left to come to Costa Rica, ABV was continually in touch with me making sure everything was arranged, taken care of, answered any questions I had.
I was lucky enough to volunteer at a hospital where I would help care for the babies or kids whose parents could not always be with them. There are not enough nurses to care for all of the kids and the parents need to eat or sleep at some point and that is where the rest of the volunteers.
Volunteer Costa Rica: From beginning to end though, you are taken care of. Someone picks you up from the airport, our host was always there for us and very helpful, and we were only ever on our own on the weekends when we decided to do excursions, which was our own choice.
