Volunteer Review Traci Donnelly in Nepal Kathmandu Orphanage/disable children
Volunteer Nepal
How were the local Coordinator and the staff and the support provided in-country?
Very helpful and organized, generous with information and resources. Helped with international phone access.
What was the most surprising thing you experienced while in the program?
The overwhelming hospitality and kindness of complete strangers. I was invited for tea and as many saw me walking daily they said hello or started conversations
What was the most difficult thing you experienced while in the program?
The only difficulty was not speaking the language at all but many people spoke a little English.
Any tips for future volunteers….(clothing, travel information, packing, sightseeing, donations)
I packed very light and it was fine. I would have taken the language immersion option. Although you are here for a reason spend 1 day seeing the diversity of this amazing country.
Other things volunteers should know:
Just accept the cultural difference as opportunities to see things from a new perspective. Don’t judge and be flexible.
Personal Paragraph (volunteer program testimonial):
I came here with no expectation and trusted it would be exactly what it was meant to be. I knew what to do when I got here and arrived at the school and orphanage. I learned so much from the children and people of Nepal. This was everything I could have hoped for.
How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security?
Everything was perfect. I felt like part of a family. The food was delicious and space very comfortable. The shower was hot and the house is very clean.
7. What was your memory of this trip?
Mostly playing with the kids, seeing children with disabilities accepted unconditionally by their peers. Listening to their stories of how they became disabled and being humbled by their expressions grateful to have so much love and support. They are happy.
8. How was the information you received from ABV prior to traveling? (Emails, website, support) was there anything missing or should be included to prepare other volunteers?
Very helpful. All information was correct and I followed exactly what I was asked to do and everything went very smoothly. I will do this again next year.
9. Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers about your volunteer experience?
Yes.
