Volunteer Name: Irais Ferreira
Project Location: La Ceiba, Honduras
Volunteered At: Hospital (medical)
What was your favorite memory of this trip? Being recruited to vaccinate the many troops at the 4th infantry post nearby
What was the most difficult thing you experienced? witnessing so much need and not having enough to give. What was surprising to you? the lack of supplies at the hospital and how the nurses made due with materiel at hand. People are so welcoming & thankful. People repected me so much.
Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc) Take initiative and just do it without fear or doubts. You will have very neat experiences this way. If coming Jan--> March bring a raincoats + umbrella. Medical volunteers bring as many supplies as you can especially gloves, gauze, alcohol swabs, and tape. Also learn a few medical terms in Spanish. Travel: Bay Islands, Copan. Meet and learn about the Garifuna people and just get out there!
Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial): Great! First experience as a medical volunteer.
How would you describe/rate your experience working with the ABV staff in the USA? ABV worked with me on such short notice and they were able to coordinate my stay within a few weeks. Thank you! Sarah responded quickly to emails and Manuel in Honduras was available and willing to help.
How was the local accommodations? My host mom was lovely. She made breakfast, lunch + dinner ready on the dot everyday. Her house was big and the rooms cozy and have a bathroom in each room. Cold showers. Bring extra snacks!
Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Of course! Contact me via email or Facebook.
