The volunteer experience in Guatemala was very good after I worked out my schedule at the firefighters. I did the clinic in the morning, and the ambulance at night. The firefighters are very good at remote medicine as they can do a lot with a little due to their limited resources.
- How were the local ABV coordinators and the support provided in-country?
- Very good, the helped me with any logistical issues. The orientation briefing was very accurate.
- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?
- How safe Xela is, and Guatemala in general too.
- What was most difficult to experience?
- Waiting. Being in a reactionary job such as a fire department requires much of this, so I had to find constructive things to do with my “down-time”.
- Any tips for future volunteers? (clothing, travel, personal items, donations, etc. ?
- Be a good guest – the sooner they get to know you, the more they will ask you to do.
- Be clear of what you want to do
- Find a way to help wherever you are.
- Other things volunteers should know?
- Spanish is very important in Xela
- The firefighters are very limited in resources, so bring extra.
- It can be beneficial to find good things to do in rest time, for example salsa lessons.
- Nothing more from me.

- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security (e.g. host family, on-site, shared)
- The host family was nice. I did not have much time for meals there though.
- What was your favorite memory of this trip?
- The teamwork of the firefighters. They are a great group and very fun to work with, very warm and helpful.
- How was the ABV USA support prior to traveling?
- All good, nothing to add.
- Are you willing to speak to potential ABV volunteers?
- Yes.
