Volunteer Review Molly Fierstein Belize orphanage program University of Dayton

Being an international volunteer, especially for a short period of time, can be challenging. But it is so worth it. These kids, this place and this experience will stay with me long after I leave. I want to do right by these kids and this place and be an advocate and spread that joy and kindness that I found to be overflowing here in Belize, even if I physically can’t be here, the trip was just the beginning there is much more to do.

1. How would you describe/rate the support provided by our in-country Coordinator & staff?
Definitely felt supported. They picked us up from the airport, gave us a tour of the facility, gave us more information on the goals/mission of this place, and help arrange excursion days for us.

2. What is your favorite memory of your trip?
My favorite memory is just the little smiles, hugs and waves I would get throughout the week. I would happen to make eye contact with one of the kids or they would run up to me unexpectedly and their response were so full of joy and love and happiness.

3. What was most personally challenging aspect of this program for you?
knowing that I was only going to be here for a week. I wanted to maximize my experience and do as much as I could in that time but it was hard knowing I’d be leaving the kids so soon..

4. Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, sightseeing spots, tours, packing etc)
Just do as much as you can, try to get to know as many of the kids as possible and if you have any free time/days off go and explore more of Belize you never know when you will be back.
