Before coming on this trip I did some reading about people like me that participate in trips like this – come for a week and then go back to their ordinary lives. I didn’t want to enter this week with the mindset that I was going to be the one creating change. I wanted to welcome change from the children. I have been amazed by my experienced in Belize – one that is so rare an experience. I have been so overwhelmed by the love and care extended to me on my short stat.
1) How would you describe/rate the support provided by our in-country Coordinator & staff?
Before coming on the trip I did not feel fully prepared for what the week was going to be include and what be expected of me. I think it would be beneficial to receive a tour and over view of the rules upon arrival.
2) What is your favorite memory of your trip?
My Favorite memory was learning from the children at the orphanage- songs, dances, games, how to love. Every day I was overwhelmed by the care of the people of Belize.
3) What was most personally challenging aspect of this program for you?
The most challenging aspect was coming to terms with my role in the children’s lives. At times I felt as if they could be having just as much fun if I wasn’t there and trying to enter their lives and be greeted with openness was sometimes difficult.
ABV: leave any expectations out and come with open hands, these children need the support.
4) Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, sightseeing spots, tours, packing etc)
I would advise packing of extra jackets and pants because the weather is unpredictable! Extra towels and a bottle for water would also be a good thing to include.
ABV: read the volunteer guide as it states these packing items
