Affordable Best Volunteer Abroad Trips Uganda 2023

Are you ready to take a trip to Uganda? Maybe you’ve already done some of the research and you know that Uganda is an amazing place to go. Maybe you just did some research about the type of programs there.

Maybe you don’t really know why you’re picking Uganda but it stands out to you. Well, there are all kinds of amazing things that you should know before you take that next trip, and we’re going to tell you all about it.

All About Uganda

First, let’s take a look at just what Uganda has to offer as a country. Here you’ll find beautiful views and scenic vistas that include Lake Victoria and the African fauna. You’ll find some of the move amazing animals and the most diverse collection of these animals as well. And they’re all in the wild, so you’re getting to experience them in their natural habitats. You’ll be able to explore the beauty of the wilderness and in your free time you’re definitely going to want to travel through the parks, the public gardens, the shores of the lake and a whole lot more. There’s so much to see that you may not even think about all of the amazing people and cultural experiences available.

But the culture and the people of Uganda are also not to be missed. The people are diverse, representing a range of different ethnic groups. They speak Swahili, though many also speak English here as well. You’ll have the opportunity to really immerse yourself in the cultures of the people, as well as their traditions, but you’re going to see a great deal of hardship here as well. The country is poor and in many areas actually destitute. You’ll see polluted water and starving families. You’ll see orphanages full of children and people who simply have no access to education. But that’s where you can make a difference.

Volunteer Opportunities in Uganda

Let’s take a closer look at the good (and the not so good) of taking a gap year. You’ll probably get feedback and opinions from everyone you know, but it’s always going to be a good idea to look into things for yourself. We’re going to talk about why people love them and why they don’t, so when it comes time for you to make your decision you’re going to be ahead of the curve. From there, it’s going to be entirely up to you where to go and what to do.

Pros of a Gap Year

There are a number of different mission trips available to Uganda and they’re targeted to work with different issues that are facing the population of this amazing place. The trips that we take are focused in two distinct areas, Wakiso and Mukono. These are actually very poor areas, with 98% of each city living in a rural area. This means that most of them are involved in subsistence agriculture and there is a distinct lack of access to anything and everything that the people need.

People in these regions lack not only money but health care and health facilities, education, clean water and a great deal more. They have no understanding of their own health needs and no access to HIV counseling or testing. Yet, these people want to do what’s best for their children and themselves. That’s where the programs available through A Broader View can absolutely make a difference for the people in these poverty-stricken areas.

Our mission trips are from one to twelve weeks, so there’s a program available that will fit the time frame you have available. Not only that but they give you a work schedule similar to what you would have in your hometown. You work Monday through Friday, eight hours each day. And the rest of your day and the weekends while you are there will be yours. That means you can immerse yourself fully in the culture and get to know the people and the towns that you’re staying in. Not only that but it’s easy to get there and there are varied programs available for you to join.

What you can Do

Community Development – These programs are designed to help improve the overall community. That’s done through working with the people in the community. We try to teach the locals different activities that they can use to make money. We teach them skills that they can take and apply throughout their lives and we encourage education for children. In fact, we especially help with the education of orphans and what are considered vulnerable children. Plus, we provide health support, HIV and AIDS information and even more education about all of it.

Medical & Community Health – Medical programs are just that, designed to help with the medical needs of the people within the community. These programs provide assistance from doctors as well as medical students and interns. They might help with maternity services (in areas where a full maternity program is not yet up and running), providing diagnosis and treatment services and even offering immunizations and contraceptives. Volunteers can help with family planning, reproductive health, prevention of disease and even general health care and education. Individuals in these communities may not have the understanding they need even to prevent general illness.

Children’s Education – Educating the children in a community is going to be essential to getting that community up and running and making sure that they are going to be successful even going forward. These programs work to provide education services to children no matter what their station. Whether these children have households and families or they are orphans or children living on the street, the education programs look to provide primary and secondary level education that will set them up to become more successful in the future and to continue to make a difference within their own communities.

Maternity & Midwifery – There are many pregnant women and even young girls and teenagers throughout Uganda and yet these individuals are not receiving the care that they actually need. Instead, they’re struggling through their pregnancy without advice or medical care. With the help of volunteers, these individuals can receive the care that they need and they’re definitely going to better understand their own family planning abilities, HIV and AIDS transmission and even how to keep their infants healthy after birth. All of this and more are definitely necessary for new moms especially but also for those with multiple children at home.

Orphanages & Child Care – Children are often left entirely too much to their own devices in these countries simply because the parents are incapable of caring for them or don’t know how to care for them properly. As a result, orphanages are overfull and children don’t get the care that they need. They are hungry, abused and they just don’t have the ability to do any of the things that the children we all know do every day. As a volunteer you would be responsible for helping them get ready in the mornings, playing games with them and just helping them to learn and to enjoy their lives as much as possible.

Conservation & Solar Power – Finally, programs that focus on the environment are always a good idea. These programs seek to explain to the people within Uganda about the importance of taking care of the environment and the ways that they can use solar power to help themselves. Not only are they taught how to use solar power themselves and to connect it into their homes but also they’re taught how to create an income through the creation of solar lanterns. All of these things make it easier for at-risk mothers, orphans, elders, students and more to learn and to improve with the assistance of these solar lights.
